Though its a black and white movie, still the camera works and lighting was so eye catching. BGM score was accurate with sequences and created mysterious vibes whole time. you"ill feel uncomfortable, something fishy and mysterious in whole run time. Also the humor and comedy timing of both Defoe & Robert was outstanding. Both Compete each other with their acting skill. no words for them.
Director Robert Eggers done it with great cinematic experience. Recommended. Not only is The Lighthouse a masterpiece, it"s my favorite film of the year so far, the most terrifying film I have ever seen, one of the best films of the decade, and possibly one of my favorite films of all time. This is one of those few times where I feel a film has no flaws at all. Most of this movie"s greatness comes from the performances of Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, especially Dafoe. What these two do in their respective roles is crazy and awesome. Watching them go through this slow descent into madness is awesome, mesmerizing, and terrifying to watch but Willem Dafoe absolutely steals the show. At certain points in the film, Dafoe goes on a 2 minute tirad about something and it"s one steady, uncut shot of him and it"s incredibly intense and terrifying. Dafoe was 100 percent born for this role. He fits so perfectly into it and this is probably a career best performance from him so far. This is also a career best for Robert Pattinson as well. Although his performance isn"t as fantastic as Dafoe"s, he still does an outstanding job. I want Joaquin Phoenix, Willem Dafoe, and Robert Pattinson to get nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars but Willem Dafoe deserves to win the award. The script is phenomenal. Each line of dialogue is well written and clever and any jokes the film makes fit well. The Lighthouse has in my opinion the best cinematography of the year. Every single shot of the film is unique and memorable and there are tons of beautiful shots. There are a lot of one shot takes with the characters talking or working on something which are the best shots in the film for the most part. The aspect ratio for the film is much smaller than the standard aspect ratio. This aspect ratio change and camerawork mixes together a claustrophobic atmosphere which is perfect for what The Lighthouse is going for. I felt that these characters genuinely had no escape from this place because of these filmmaking techniques. The production design of the actual Lighthouse is fantastic. The sets look beautiful even in black and white. Anything the film does with sound is breathtaking. The sound design for the foghorn that plays throughout the film and certain elements of the film I can"t spoil all sounds awesome. The score by Mark Korven is so far, my favorite score of the year. Every single piece fits perfectly into its respective scene. Each piece is so unique and different from the one before and each is memorable in their own way. My favorite piece would be the first track titled Arrival. The Lighthouse"s major themes that I caught are isolation and insanity. While themes like that are common in film, the way The Lighthouse uses these themes makes it so unique. Watching these two men go insane on this island is mesmerizing thanks to Robert Eggers incredibly direction. Overall, The Lighthouse is a fantastic take on isolation with career bests from Pattinson and Dafoe along with outstanding cinematography, an intelligent script, and a jaw dropping story, and an intense musical score.

The acting by Joaquin Phoenix is without any doubt Oscar worthy and he carries the entire film. The story does a wonderful job of describing in too much detail the slow torturous descent of a slightly crazy young man into a full blown lost crazy man without meds. And the back story is well written with some nice twists that few comic stories make the viewer feel like this could be any person in any city that could suddenly turn crazy without their meds.
But besides the obvious fall from grace and tragic events that lead to his downfall it is a far cry from making one feel like this Joker is going to turn into the future Joker that is a genius manipulator and Gotham city nemesis to Batman, etc. You almost wish the film went a bit longer to see how the Joker genius ignites. It is almost like his character by luck or chance stumbles upon some ideas and then out of the blue. the entire city is already rioting and tearing the place to pieces. and the Joker is just a sliver of influence. Not the master manipulator and he looks shocked it happens.
Maybe that is the entire point. that the inequality and injustice is so out of control deep inside the city that it only took a few crazy acts from the Joker to ignite that flame into a giant riot. Makes one think twice about what is going on in HKong and Iraq and what city will be next.
It is a film that makes one think about many aspects of life and character studies but the depth of showing why this all cascades into mayhem is barely touched upon. trite things like garbage strike, super rats, even the 1% wealthy and Mr Wayne are portrayed in a vague manner that lacks any reason for riots. And it does not have the entertaining comic book depth that one expects from a character like the Joker of the future. this guy is milk toast that might one day percolate into the genius maniac Heather/Nicholson Joker - but it felt more like a thriller character development story and less of a DC icon yet still an enjoyable film. Kudos to Phillips for taking a chance on making a gritty film even if references are stolen from Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, King of Comedy, etc. This might be a good prelude to a sequel that shows the transition to Joker genius Joker 2 and Joker 3 like the Hang Over trilogy. I sure hope not!
A 7 mostly for the acting but not a 10 like some claim on here which is a bit excessive. It is no masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination.

Joaquin: How about another joke, Jim-may? Jimmy: slams table and laughs uncontrollably. Jokers update. An absolutely incredible movie, riveting from start to end. So many reviews call Arthur a ‘creep or a ‘loser, but I feel those are inaccurate depictions. He seemed to have such a good heart. He seemed to genuinely want to make people happy. He seemed willing to work hard and be nice and fair to others. And yet others couldnt to him because he was different. It broke my heart. I rooted so hard for you, Arthur.
